The Optimism About Renewable Power — But Do Projects Meet Their Schedule?

What’s the issue?

As the climate goals of the country and individual states develop, it will be useful to understand the scope of needed new generation sources and when they are likely to go into commercial operation.

Why does it matter?

Understanding what generation projects are in the queue and when they are expected online will allow the market to anticipate the need for enabling infrastructure, but also to anticipate how the markets will adjust when these sources come online.

What’s our view?

We are creating a model that will allow our customers to both monitor the proposed new generation projects and to project the anticipated commercial operation dates in a manner similar to our current platform for natural gas pipeline projects. Our initial take is that electric generation developers, like all developers, tend to be overly optimistic. Our new generation projections, as with our projections for pipelines, will be more conservative, but also more accurate, than the developer’s anticipated commercial operation date.
