What’s the issue?
With the Georgia Senate elections now completed, we know that both the legislative and executive branches will be controlled by the Democratic party.
Why does it matter?
There is substantial concern that the next four years could be as bad for natural gas as the last four years were for coal as the push for renewables continues to supplant carbon-emitting fuels.
What’s our view?
The close divide between the parties in both chambers of Congress may mean that centrists in both parties will have a greater say in what occurs in that branch of government. The Energy Act of 2020 that was signed into law between Christmas and New Year’s may be a good early indicator that all is not lost for the fossil fuel industry, and particularly natural gas, especially if it can learn to reduce its carbon footprint.
